Note: Class Assignments and Referencing

Just a reminder to all #ALES204 students:

In all your e-portfolio posts you are required to include an image - remember that the image MUST be cited appropriately using APA style

In all your other assignments (such as the Science Article Assignment) you will refer to academic peer-reviewed work which must be cited within your own essay/argument AND you will need to include a list of references. All of this must follow APA style.

  1. if we use a photo we took ourselves (such as a screenshot) it's not necessary to cite it is it?

  2. Do we have to provide a reference list at the bottom of out blog post with the links we used in the blog post?

    1. Cassandra, you don't need a reference list in the blog post but if you DO choose to include one (great practise!) make sure it follows APA style.

  3. Good question Lauren but your reader won't know the etymology of that image so ALWAYS cite, even if you took it yourself. APA has some guidelines on this:

Image downloaded from Flickr (personal images uploaded by others) reproduced in a text (you would put your name as the author!)

    Fig. 5. harshilshah100 (2009) Vienna - Rathaus, [digital image]. Retrieved October 9, 2009 from Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/harshilshah/3823135957.

    Citing Images Using APA Style:

To cite an image you found online, use the image title or a general description in your text, and then cite it using the first element in the works cited entry and date.

    Examples:
The Dream (Rousseau, 1910) baffled art critics when it debuted, mere months before the artist’s death in September of that year.

As demonstrated in Up Close and Personal with the Very Large Telescope (Salgado, 2010), the fish eye camera lens creates uniquely distorted images, which often evokes the curvature of the earth.

Incorporating Images into the Text of a Paper:

In the text, refer to figures by their number (i.e., Figure 1 or Figure 2). Do not refer to figures as "the figure below" or "the figure above."
Place the figure close as possible to the part of text referencing it, unless otherwise instructed by your professor.
Center the image in the paper.
Number the figures consecutively, beginning with Figure 1.
Provide a brief description of the image. The caption should serve as both a title and explanation.
On the same line as the figure number and caption, provide the source and copyright information for the image in the following format:
Figure X. Descriptive caption of image. From Image title, by Creator’s Name, Year of creation, Database/URL. Copyright Date by Name of Copyright Holder. Reprinted with permission.

  4. So I am a little confused still on how to cite a screenshot or personal photo. Do we upload it to Flickr first and then use the citation style you had described above? Or can I write "Screenshot taken from personal computer. Retrieved (enter the date) at (enter time)."
