Module 1 Lecture 1
A bit more about CSL:
Community Service-Learning (CSL) makes learning come alive by linking academic course work to community-based experiences. Active engagement with non-profit organizations allows students to explore relationships between course concepts and ‘real world’ contexts. When enrolled in a CSL class, students participate in a community project that is both relevant to the course content and useful to the partnering organization.
By completing a number of courses with a CSL component, including our CSL-designated courses, students can earn a Certificate in Community Service-Learning upon graduation

InfoLink Academic and Information Services
At InfoLink we strive to be a comprehensive student information source for all things university related. We specialize in academic information but are able to assist with any campus related question; if we don’t know the answer, we’ll find someone who does! By exploring this website you’ll be able to access our Tutor Listings,Exam Registry, Volunteer Opportunity Listings, Used Book Listings, Housing Listings and our Rideboard Listings. Students who participate in this term's CSL placement will be able to assist in the promotion of our annual Involvement Week, which is a celebration of volunteering, and the new SU Tutors program, which aims to provide tutors with the skills and resources that they will need to help their fellow students succeed.
Writers Guild of Alberta
Nichole Quiring, the program coordinator for the Writers Guild of Alberta is looking for a CSL student to assist with a few tasks related to administering Alberta Arts Days events (Sep 30 – Oct. 2). This would include attending the events and helping with hosting and marketing the events through Twitter and Facebook. As well, there are three events coming up in November and December that a CSL student could assist with planning and coming up with a small Social Media marketing plan for each event. Lastly, we could also use a little help in updating the Guild’s media contact list.
Sustain U
SUSTAIN SU is a service of the Students' Union that provides peer-to-peer learning and support for all undergraduate students to incorporate sustainability into every aspect of their university experience. This includes providing sustainability-based services to the entire campus community, as well as opportunities to facilitate change on a larger scale. SUSTAIN SU defines sustainability as a decision-making process and lifestyle that balances economic, social, and environmental responsibility in a just and equitable manner.
As a CSL student with SUSTAIN SU, you will aid in communicating our organization's recent redevelopment from the Environmental Coordination Office of Students (ECOS) to SUSTAIN SU: The Student Sustainability. You will have much creative control over how you do this, but you will have access to our website and social media sites as possibilities.

Hi, my name is Clara. I am currently in my second year majoring in nutrition and minoring in physical activity. Social media has always been (and will continue to be) really important to me. Before Facebook, (I know - there really was a time BEFORE Facebook. It's mindblowing.) I was constantly on MSN after school talking to friends whom I had just seen half an hour earlier. Thanks to Facebook chat and a texting plan, I hardly log onto MSN anymore. Every now and again, I drop in on Twitter just to see if anything new and exciting has happened, but I won't hesitate to admit that I am heavily Facebook-biased. As for blogs, I've had several in the past, but I've always had a problem finding the motivation to regularly update them. One of my most recent blogs is one that I created to share the results of my cooking and baking. (Located here: http://showmetheyumyums.tumblr.com/) Although it hasn't been updated in 10 months, I've left it up on the web since I realized a few of my friends pay more attention to it than I do. Feeling-guilty Clara? You bet. Motivated-to-update Clara? Check back later...
ReplyDeleteHi, my name is Alyssa Coulombe.
ReplyDeleteI'm in my fourth year of Animal Health, majoring in companion and performance animals. As with many students in our faculty, my goal is veterinary medicine. My use of social media goes way back to the MSN and Nexopia days, both of which I was addicted to in junior high. Now i'm active on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/aangellec) and Twitter (@aangellec). I was quite skeptical of Twitter at first and it took me a while to get into it, but now I prefer it to Facebook. I like that it's so versatile and exposes you to the world, not just your 'friends'. I am also part of a Yahoo group (the Finnish Lapphund Club of Canada). I have never blogged myself, but have followed a few of my friend's blogs that they have done for some other classes, and I'm excited to get started on my own!

ReplyDeleteHey everyone, my Chinese name is Nian Liu, and you can also call me Livy! I am a second year student in U of A, but a first year student in Food Science and Technology program, because I tansferred from the Faculty of Arts in 2011 fall. I think the internet is a very valuable and convenient tool for communication and information exchange, but my current use of social media is fairly small: Facebook (I always forget to check it…), Google(for searching information ), YouTube( for keeping up on the latest news) and Skype (for communication with my parents and friends in China). I just signed up for Twitter several hours ago for this class, so there are still many new things for me to learn. It’s really cool to communicate with our professor with Twitter! I am looking forward to gaining more knowledge about Twitter and learning lots of new communication strategies in ALES 204 this term!
ReplyDeleteHello Jess & fellow ALES 204 students,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Bianca Cimino and I am currently in my third year of post-secondary studies. I am majoring in Nutrition and Food Science and hope to become a dietician once graduated. I have a love for travel, and have had the opportunity to embrace the european culture this summer in Italy, Spain, and France. I one day hope to expand my interest in nutrition with relations to the european countries. I am currently using a few forms of communication online, such as: Twitter, Facebook, and just recently learning to use Blogger!
Thus far in my studies and work these forms of communication have not had much use, however, with the rapidly growing use of technology, in the future I hope to use these forms of communication to aid in advertisement and marketing, as well as making nutritional awareness more easily accessible to others.
I am looking forward to this semester of ALES 204!
Hello Everyone,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Alexander Bautista and I am currently working through my second year of Animal Health, majoring in Food Safety and Quality. Though I do hope to transfer to the Food Science and Technology program by Fall 2012. The thought of working in the food industry after I graduate appeals greatly to me.
My current and only use of social media only includes Facebook to check up on family every now and then, otherwise I created a Twitter account just today for this class, and to follow Stephen Colbert (As depressing as the news may be, he always manages to put a humorous twist on things). However, I do look forward to learning of these new forms of communication and social media, in hopes of keeping in touch with the world as well as forming the bridge between the general public and the food industries.
Hi everyone,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Danielle Becker and I am in my second year of pre-vet, through the Animal Health program. I went to an International School for high school and am currently living in International House, thus, Facebook has become instrumental in allowing me to keep in contact with my friends. I check Facebook daily and enjoy using this form of social media to keep in touch. I have only just signed up for Twitter (for the class) and hope to use it not just for the class but also for news and to follow some people knowledgeable in areas that I am passionate about. As for other forms of social media, I have a LinkedIn account though I've never used it. Other than Facebook, social media has not been a large part of my life however, it will be interesting to learn about it in this class.
Hello! My name is Rohanna, and I'm currently in my second year of the Animal Health program under Agriculture. I hope to one day become a veterinarian, or have a job which I really love, and which involves animals.
ReplyDeleteIn terms of my use in social media, I predominantely use Facebook (maybe a bit too much!) - for keeping up with friends, sharing photos (I love photography!), and being informed about upcoming events. In the past, I have briefly blogged, while Twitter is a new experience for me. However, I’m excited to get started and see where this semester leads! :)
My name is Stephanie Nash and I am in my second year majoring in Nutrition and Food Sciences and minoring in Physical Activity. I am interested in the masters program of Public Health, specifically Health Promotion.
ReplyDeleteI use Facebook occasionally, mainly to keep in touch with friends who go to school out of province. Although I have never wanted to blog, join Twitter, or use other forms of social media, perhaps the use of it in this class will make me think otherwise. I do believe that social media is beneficial for professionals and businesses to promote and connect with their customers.
Since I don't know much about social media, I look forward to learning new things in ALES 204.
Hey, my name is Emily Dymchuk. I'm in my second year studying Human Ecology majoring in Family Studies and minoring in Nutrition. The social media I use the most is Facebook, mostly to keep in touch with close family and friends. I recently started using Twitter as a fun way to connect with people and follow celebrities and people I find interesting. Other than that I use hotmail for personal e-mails and gmail for school. I'm interested to see how this class goes!
ReplyDeleteHi, my name is Yuhan Jiang. I'm a year 2 student in Food Business Management. I just transfered to this major from Nutrition and Food Science because I found Bio and Chem are so much boring... I began to use social media since high school. Now I am using Renren, Weibo and also twitter and Facebook. Although I still prefer communicate with people through message or face to face, I believe social media will become more and more important in people's daily life and work.
ReplyDeleteHello! My name is Xuechan Yang and I am a second year in Nutrition and Food Science. I like travelling and I went to Cuba during the winter break. That's a really nice place. :) Like other people, I use Facebook to contact with my friends, but I do not use it very often. I always upload many pictures that are taken during my journey. I like taking pictures and share them with my friends. Because of this class, I get a twitter account. MSN and skype are also used to contact with my families. I hope to know more about social media in ALES 204.

ReplyDeleteHi, My name is Julianna Lackowicz. I am in my third year at the U of A, but this is my first year in Human Ecology. My first two years I was enrolled in the science and nutrition program. I am not a avid facebook user or tweeter, but do enjoy these two forms of social media to keep in touch with my friends and family. The main reason I use facebook is to see pictures other people have uploaded, or to message friends. On twitter I mostly follow close friends as well as a few other accounts that make me laugh. I think the use of social media is becoming increasingly important in our everyday lives, and ALES 204 will help broaden my knowledge and ability to use social media.

ReplyDeleteHi, my name is Patrick Laska. I'm doing an after degree majoring in food business management. My first degree was in commerce. I chose this major because it is more specialized since it is more industry specific. I hope to eventually be part of the food & beverage sector as I am interested in high quality and nutritious cuisine and the production aspect of food items that maintains quality and nutrition. I don't use social media very much with the exception of youtube so this course will be a very good experience in introducing me to new media which I will no doubt find very useful for the future.
ReplyDeleteHello, my name is Vanessa Green. I am in my 3rd year of human ecology, majoring in family ecology with a minor in aging. I transferred to the University after completing 2 years at Grant MacEwan in Nursing. I realized that nursing was not a good fit for me. I am not exactly sure which career path I will take with my degree, but I would like to work with at risk populations and perhaps eventually become an addictions counselor. I don't have much experience with social media so I have a lot to learn. I have a facebook account but hardly ever use it. I primarily use it to plan events and remember birthdays. This course will definitely be a valuable learning experience for me and I look forward to broadening my knowledge and use of social media outlets.
ReplyDeleteHi! My name is Shelley Du, I am currently in my 2nd year of Human Ecology, majoring in Family Ecology and minoring in Aging. My ultimate goal is to become a Speech and Language Pathologist. I'm not too experienced with social media but I'm in the process of learning. I am actively using Facebook, I recently made a Twitter account, and I have tried to use both Tumblr and Blogspot in the past. By the end of this course, I hope to become an effective communicator in all aspects, whether it's online, or in person.
ReplyDeleteHello everyone! My name is Carmen Prion-Frank, and I am a 4th year Nutrition and Food Sciences student with a Nutrition Major. In about a year I will be done my internship placements and I will be a Registered Dietitian. During my previous internship placements I have seen how social media is slowly creeping into the world of health care and understand that there is definitely a place for social media in the professional setting. My current use of social media is my Facebook account, which I use to stay in touch with family and friends, as well as for a fan page for my art. I have to say, I am terrible at updating these things, which is also evident on my webpage/blog: www.carmenfrankart.com on Wordpress. I hope to learn a little more about the use of social media, especially for professional use.
ReplyDeleteHey, my name is Paige Powers. I am in my second year of Human Ecology with Combined Ed and am minoring in Health Education. My main source of online communication is Facebook, but I also use twitter more recently. I primarily use Facebook to stay in contact with people that I do not see regularly.
ReplyDeleteHello, my name is Rebecca Miller. I am in my second year of Human Ecology with Combined Education, I am minoring in special education. Mainly, I use Facebook and twitter as online communication, but I follow food blogs and would love to start on of my own someday.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Rosie Templeton and I'm in my 2nd year at U of A in the Agriculture Business program. I'm from a farm and cattle ranch, and hope to pursue a career in agriculture communications after obtaining my degree. I joined twitter about a year ago and now have a slight addiction. I also started a blog, Absolutely Agriculture (http://absolutelyagriculture.blogspot.com/, this summer to educate the public about issues in agriculture. I attended a conference in Nashville, TN this summer about social media in agriculture.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Elyse Semchuk and I am in my second year of the Animal Health program. I currently use Facebook to stay in touch with family and friends. I use would like to use social networking to make and maintain connections in the animal health and animal behavior industry such as the Pre-vet/Animal Health club at the U of A. I now have Twitter and love it (and the information it provides), the first person I started following was the Dog Whisperer.
ReplyDeleteHi everyone! My name is Lauren Bradshaw and I am in my 3rd year at the U of A in my Animal Health degree. My eventual career goal is to become a veterinarian but if that doesn't work out then even just doing something involving animals as a career would be awesome. I am looking forward to learning about how to utilize social media as I really only use facebook and did not have a twitter account or blog prior to this class. I'm interested to see how these forms of social media can be used in different ways!
ReplyDeleteHey, my name is Jessica Breda. I'm a second year student taking a BSc in Animal Health, with a major in companion and performance animals. Ever since I got a laptop for high school grad, I've spent a lot of time on facebook. I use it to talk to my friends, people I haven't seen in a while and occasionally my relatives. It's also a great place to show pictures of me and my friends and see all of their pictures. I'm quite addicted to youtube as well. I've never really posted my own video but I find its the best place to look up any topic I want to learn about, especially when it comes to math or stat finals. I recently got back into using MSN also. I know hardly anyone uses it now but I have a few good friends that pop on once in a while to talk. I like MSN chat much much better than facebook chat.
ReplyDeleteHello, my name is Christine and I'm in my first year of Conservation Biology and my first year at the U of A. I feel like such a baby, well actually I could technically be in second year, but decided to take a break to 100% decide on what I wanted to do. I feel I made the best decision, and am enjoying this new experience.
ReplyDeleteAs for social media and communication, I am fairly simplistic. I use the ever popular Facebook to check what everyone is up to, and probably check it needlessly on my phone when I could be doing better things, as well as other popular sites such as my personal email and YouTube to listen to music, and constantly find myself on "the cat side" of YouTube.
I also use an app called instagram, mostly because i feel the need to broadcast my handsome cat and other animal friends to the world. Other than that, i try to limit the amount of social media internet communication sites because I feel that it is still important to value good old face to face conversation and for the most part i feel that i am too busy to be connected to so many things. I died a little inside when I joined twitter for this class because it was the one site i did not want to join the bandwagon. However, being the optimist, I am going to make the best of all the new social media i will be submersed in and we'll see how much I am able to remember to check everything on a regular basis, for the rest of the term at least.
Sorry! I posted in the Fall site by mistake as well, here's my short introduction!
ReplyDeleteHi, my name is Chau Chin Yo, and I am in my second year at the University of Alberta. I am currently in Nutrition and Food Sciences, hoping to transfer to a Nutrition major. Prior to this class, the only social media tools that I used were Facebook and Youtube. I also told myself I would never use Twitter because I thought it was pointless, but that's no longer possible! Since I made an account, I've found it to be rather fun, and I'm afraid I'm going to end up addicted to it! I look forward to learning more about social media in this class, and you can follow me @chauyo. =)
Hi,my name is Feiyan Zhou and I am in my second year majoring in Nutrition and food. Before this course,I use RenRen and QQ to contact with my family and friends in China. But now I have a Twitter account and its diverse characteristics attract me.It shows me a new way to have the course and to communicate with others.I am looking forward to learning more about social media and enjoying the class.
ReplyDeleteHello my name is Minmin Gao, and I am a second year student in major of Nutrition and Food science. I use Skype, Facebook, Twitter, MSN and similar social media tools. Skype is frequently used between me and parents. MSN and Facebook are quite often used among friends and classmates. Gmail is used in communicating with groups, organizations and professors. I hope I can learn more about communication methods in this course and make more friends in the class and out of the class with new social media tools!
ReplyDeleteHello, my name is Xinru Ye. This is my second year in nutrition and food major. I hope my work in future can be related to research in that area. I like swimming, cooking and traveling. I just had a nice trip to BC in the holiday.
ReplyDeleteI use social media everyday in my life. The major role for me to use that is to keep track of what my friends are doing and keep in touch with my family and friends who are far away from me.I check my facebook everyday and this can be a way to get relaxed from work. I also use discussion group on QQ to chat with a group of my friends about once to twice a week.Sometimes, this can also be a tool for us to discuss about problems in either study or life and help each other to deal with these problems. I have a blog on QQ as well. Other than those, I just signed up a twitter today and I'm excited to learn more about this social media this term!
Hello,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Marney Steadman and I am a second year student in ENCS majoring in conservation biology. I'm interested in travelling, art, music, and outdoor activities. I do not currently use many forms of social media. I use facebook to keep in contact with friends. I have just recently made a skype account to stay in touch with a friend of mine who is studying abroad in France. I have never used twitter before and am looking forward to seeing what it is all about through this class. I have a few friends with blogs and tumblr accounts that I occasionally look at but I do not have one of my own. I use myspace to find new up and coming musicians but I don't have my own page. I think this class will be very useful as the next moves in communication are becoming more and more computer based, which means I have a lot to learn.
My name is Lutong Huang. I'm a second year student in Nutrition and Food Science. I really like fashion and crazy about shopping, and I'm also interested in reading about food and health because health is very important for everyone. I have my blog since I'm in grade six, but I don't often update it because I'm a bit lazy:D, but I check my Facebook everyday because facebook is much more convenient than blog. I don't need to write a whole long article, just express what I feel, what I do, what I like in couple senetence even one sentence, then all of my friends can understand me. By the way, I can easy know what happen to my friends and know more about them. Not only Facebook, I also use microblog to communicate with my friends in China. It is the same as twitter. I pretty enjoy using microblog, it gives me a lot information about what happen in my hometown, and what happen to my friends. Therefore, I can keep chatting with my friends. I don't always use twitter, because none of my friends uses it. Hahaha. However, it is very interesting to use twitter as a main social media in class. It must be a fun class!!!!!
ReplyDeleteHey everyone!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Erin Hrycan I am a 2nd year sciences student studying nutrition. This is my first year at the U of A, I transferred here to do the nutrition major to become an RD. I am what one would call a very avid Facebook user...continuously uploading pictures and statuses and checking in with all of my friends online. Ever since I got a lap top I have found social media having a great influence on my day to day life. I love staying connected with friends and family via Facebook and Twitter. I find it keeps a continuous flow of information to those people that you may not always get a chance to talk to everyday! I am obsessed with my cat Tein and for all you other cat lovers do check out http://icanhascheezburger.com/. This is a website full of pictures of cats with great captions. Just another way that social media plays into my life! Looking forward to meeting the rest of you and learning lots more about social media and communication.
My name is Lucas Poitras I am in my 2nd year in, encs. I like most sports playing and watching, and can play card games for hours especially Texas hold'em. For social media I use facebook quite regularly. For other social media I am not that into because I really don't find knowing every action a person makes interesting. But I will come into this class open minded and see how I like the other social media and communication online.
ReplyDeleteHi! I'm Kandice Mueller and I'm in my second year in the Ales faculty in the Nutrition major program. Though nutrition is one of my main interests I also enjoy travel, yoga, and all activities in the mountains. I currently use Facebook to keep in touch with friends near and far and have minimally used a blog in the past while traveling. I look forward to sharing ideas and using modern methods of communication in Ales 204. Have a great semester!
